Karachi operation to continue indiscriminately: PM

ISLAMABAD, 30 DEC (DNA) – In a straightforward message to Sindh Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Wednesday said that Karachi operation will continue indiscriminately.

Qaim Ali Shah called on Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in Islamabad today to discuss issues of Rangers’ policing powers and expenditures on Karachi operation. Federal Ministers Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan and Ishaq Dar as well as provincial ministers Murad Ali Shah and Sohail Anwar Siyyal are also present in the meeting.

On the occasion, the Prime Minister urged the PPP-led Sindh government to back the operation. He said that more than Rs25 billion have been spent on this operation in last two and a half years, thus, fruits of this operation should not go waste.

The Prime Minister clearly said that the Interior Ministry’s notification on Rangers exclusive powers will remain unchanged. He reiterated that targeted operation in Karachi is in better interest of Sindh and the country.

Meanwhile, Qaim Ali Shah remarked that Sindh Assembly’s resolution is in accordance with the law and constitution. Sindh government should have rights of Karachi operation, he said. At the end, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif directed Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar to visit Karachi next week to issues pertaining to Karachi operation and address Sindh government’s reservations.

Karachi, a sprawling city of roughly 20 million, has long had a reputation for high crime rates as well as ethnic, political and sectarian violence. Overall levels of militant, criminal and sectarian-linked violence have decreased significantly since paramilitary forces began a sweeping crackdown in 2013. DNA
