Opposition seeks debate on Panama leaks in Parliament

ISLAMABAD, 09 MAY (DNA) – Opposition parties on Monday called for Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to explain his position on Panama leaks in the Parliament.

The demand was made by the opposition parties in a meeting presided over by Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Syed Khurshid Shah in Islamabad Monday. “We will demand debate on an adjournment motion submitted by Sheikh Rashid,” he said. “We are waiting for the prime minister to come to the parliament and give answers on Panama leaks.”

While addressing the meeting of the Parliamentary leaders of the opposition parties in the Parliament House on Monday, Shah said that the opposition is not at fight with the government.

He added that he awaits the reply to the letter he wrote to the PM regarding the Terms of References (TORs) of the investigation commission probing into the matter; further stating that Parliament is the one forum through which Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) fought its battles.

Shah said that the PM should explain his stance in the Parliament as he himself says that all issues must be discussed within the Parliament, he also stated that the PM should bring forth details regarding his assets and tax returns in the Parliament as well.

Leader of the Opposition said that demand will be made to have discussion upon the adjournment motion submitted by Awami Muslim League (AML) leader Sheikh Rasheed Ahmed, adding that if permission is not granted to speak within the Parliament then the opposition parties shall organise a protest against the government.

Speaking on the occasion, Senator Aitezaz Ahsan said that opposition parties would continue boycott of the upper house till the arrival of Prime Minister Sharif. He urged the prime minister to submit details of his assets and income taxes in the Senate.

“The whole nation is in a state of confusion due to the prevailing circumstances,” he said, adding that Prime Minister was trying to avoid the parliament to conceal facts. PTI leader Shah Mahmood Qureshi, MQM leader Dr Farooq Sattar, Aftab Sherpao and other opposition leaders attended the meeting.  DNA
