RAWALPINDI, SEPT 07 (DNA) – The police officials who were sentenced to prison in the Benazir Bhutto murder case have challenged the anti-terrorism court (ATC)’s judgment in Lahore High Court (LHC)’s circuit bench.

Saud Aziz and Khurram Shahzad have approached LHC’s Rawalpindi circuit bench on Wednesday after receiving a copy of detailed judgment, informed sources said.

At time of Bhutto’s assassination, Saud Aziz was the city police chief and Khurram Shahzad was the former Superintendent of Police (SP) Rawal Town in Rawalpindi.

The duo was sentenced 17 years of imprisonment by an anti-terrorism court last week.

The judgment had come after a marathon trial spanning nine years of time, declaring former army chief Pervez Musharraf as absconder while acquitting five accused said to be associated with banned outfit over lack of evidence.

The court had also ordered confiscation of the movable and immovable property of Musharraf, who was implicated in the case in February 2011.

The five suspects Rafaqat Hussain, Hasnain Gul, Sher Zaman, Aitzaz Shah and Abdul Rasheed were exonerated from the murder charges.

Awarding imprisonment to police officials, the court had also imposed a penalty of Rs500,000 each and ruled that in case of non-payment of the fine they will have to undergo additional imprisonment of six months.=DNA
