We closely follow Nagorno-Karabakh conflict: OSCE Secretary General
BAKU, (DNA) – We closely follow the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, Thomas Greminger, the new OSCE Secretary General said in an interview.
“We have a special tool – a mission led by personal representative of the OSCE Secretary General Andrzej Kasprzyk, whose employees are closely watching the situation along the contact line. We were worried about the outbreak of the conflict in the recent past”, Greminger said.
He also noted, that his role as the Secretary General is to support the work of the three co-chairs of the Minsk Group, whose efforts are aimed at finding a peaceful solution to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.
The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.
The 1994 ceasefire agreement was followed by peace negotiations. Armenia has not yet implemented four UN Security Council resolutions on withdrawal of its armed forces from the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding districts.
