USF Afghan mission chief meets Gen Raheel
RAWALPINDI: The commander of Resolute Support Mission and United States Forces (USF) in Afghanistan, General John F Campbell, called on Army Chief General Raheel Sharif on Monday at General Headquarters (GHQ) to talk about regional peace and stability.
According to an Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) statement, the army chief and the US commander discussed peace and reconciliation process in Afghanistan along with other matters of mutual interest.
Earlier this month, Afghan President Ashraf Ghani, who visited Pakistan to attend the Heart of Asia Conference also met the COAS and emphasised upon the need of enhancing bilateral relations between both the countries and collectively eliminate the common threat of extremism.
ISPR had claimed that General Raheel had assured the Afghan president of full support in intelligence sharing, operational coordination and reconciliation process for bringing peace and stability in Afghanistan.
On the very same day, In a trilateral meeting, Afghanistan, Pakistan and the United States (US) agreed to explore and encourage all efforts for dialogue between the Afghanistan’s government and the insurgent Taliban groups.
Pakistan had hosted a meeting between the Afghan Government and Afghan Taliban representatives in Murree on July 7, 2015, along with the representatives from China and USA.
The participants were duly mandated by their respective leadership and expressed their collective desire to bring peace to Afghanistan and the region.
The second round of the talks, which was scheduled to be held in Pakistan on July 31, 2015, was postponed in view of the reports regarding the death of Mullah Omar and the leadership crisis among Taliban.
