PARC organizes walk to celebrate World Soil Day

  • Islamabad, Dec 6 (DNA): World Soil Day (WSD) is held annually on 5th December to focus attention on the importance of healthy soil and advocating for the sustainable management of soil and land resources.

To celebrate WSD as an international day was recommended by the International Union of Soil Sciences (IUSS) in 2002 under the leadership of the Kingdom of Thailand and within the framework of the Global Soil Partnership. In December 2013 the UN General Assembly designated 5thDecember 2014 as the first official World Soil Day. FAO has been supporting the WSD as a global awareness raising platforms for all the stake holders since then formally.

In this regard, Land Resources Research Institute (LRRI) NARC with the collaboration of Soil Science Society of Pakistan (SSSP) celebrates the WSD on regular basis since 2015 and organizes a short walk with the collaboration of Soil Science Society of Pakistan (SSSP) within the NARC premises in order to celebrate the day and create awareness among the stakeholders of PARC. Dr Ghulam Muhammad Ali, Chairman PARC and other high officials of PARC-NARC participated in the walk and grace the event.

The theme for World Soil Day 2021 is “Halt soil salinization, boost soil productivity”. Its motive is to raise awareness about maintaining healthy ecosystems and our well-being, by pointing out the dangers of soil salinity. Motivating governments, organizations and secluded communities about keeping soil healthy is this year’s aim. Soil salinization and sodification are major soil degradation processes threatening ecosystem and are recognized as being among the most important problems at a global level for agricultural production, food security and sustainability in arid and semi-arid regions. World Soil Day 2021 and its campaign aims to raise awareness of the importance of maintaining healthy ecosystems and human well-being by addressing the growing challenges in soil management, fighting soil salinization, increasing soil awareness, and encouraging societies to improve soil health. World Soil Day demands that recognition and support for the management of soil along with its sustainable utilization.
