Nawaz Sharif condemns Trump’s Jerusalem decision on PML-N’s behalf

LONDON, DEC 07 (DNA) – Former prime minister and PML-N president Nawaz Sharif has condemned the United States’ decision to recognise Jerusalem as capital of Israel.

In a statement issued from London on Thursday, Nawaz Sharif, while vehemently condemning the US announcement to move her Israeli embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, said this decision of the US amounts to violation of the United Nations resolutions and international law. “Trump’s statement flouts the policies of former US presidents and is a jolt to international laws and customs”, Nawaz added.

The momentous decision was announced by President Donald J. Trump in a White House media conference on Wednesday.

Nawaz Sharif reminded that several international institutions including the UN have repeatedly been condemning the measures taken by the state of Israel as they resulted in homelessness of millions of Palestinians over the years. Handing over Jerusalem to Israeli state at this point is thus analogous to rubbing salt on the wounds of already incapacitated Palestinians.

Nawaz Sharif welcomed the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s call to summon Organisation of Islamic Cooperation’s (OIC) summit on emergency basis over the prevailing issue. Nawaz urged the UN Security Council members to begin consultations at the earliest so as to suggest remedial measures to avert adverse consequences of the US’s Jerusalem decision.

Nawaz further stated that the Muslim Ummah is undergoing a period of great strain. He warned that our reaction will not only affect the future of Palestine but also that of the United Nations.

“We ought to decide whether we need an international community bound by customs and laws or a one which will propel us to unlawful realm of international relations”, Nawaz concluded.
