NAB underlines need for cooperation with China

ISLAMABAD, 03 JUNE (DNA) – Chairman National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on Wednesday said that Chinese investment in Pakistan in various projects is encouraging; especially the Economic Corridor Project will further enhance it.

There is a need to have closer cooperation on anti-corruption issues so that the fruit of development projects go directly to the masses, Qamar Zaman Chaudhry, Chairman NAB stated in a meeting with Sun Weidong, Ambassador of People’s Republic of China who called on him at NAB Headquarters.

Matters of mutual interest including the visit of Huang Shuxian, Chinese Minister of Supervision and Deputy Secretary of the Communist Party of China’s Central Commission for Discipline Inspection to Pakistan signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between Pakistan and China for sharing each other’s experiences in curbing corruption and to carry out the steps for sharing the knowledge of White Collar Criminals, money laundering and other issues of bilateral interests were discussed.

Chairman NAB informed that on the invitation of H.E. Mr. Huang Shuxian, Chinese Minister of Supervision and Deputy Secretary of the Communist Party of China’s Central Commission for Discipline Inspection, he visited China in 2014 where he was briefed about the working of Ministry of Supervision of the People’s Republic of China.

He was informed that Ministry of Supervision, China is responsible for the supervision work, law enforcement, Anti-corruption and efficiency of the State Council and its personnel as well as that of the people’s governments of all provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities. Chairman said that it was a very learning experience as to how the whole process is being organized in China and the way it is being implemented.

He said that the Chinese President Xi Jinping has shown serious commitment against corruption in China and has cracked down on both “tigers” and “flies” i.e powerful leaders and junior officials in his campaign against corruption.

The Chairman NAB informed that NAB has adopted a three-pronged strategy for curbing corruption from the country i.e. Enforcement, Awareness and Prevention. The Enforcement Strategy is given emphasis to create deterrence among the functionaries of government, private sector, business community and others to check indulgence in the acts of corruption.

The Chairman NAB informed that Prime Minister of Pakistan has approved an invitation for visit of Huang Shuxian, Minister of Supervision People’s Republic of China to Pakistan in September 2015.

He presented invitation letter Sun Weidong, Ambassador of China. He informed that during his visit to Pakistan, a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) will be signed between Pakistan and China to carry out the steps of sharing the knowledge of White Collar Criminals, Money Laundering and other issues of bilateral interests.

Sun Weidong, Ambassador of China appreciated the efforts of NAB in curbing corruption and corrupt practices from Pakistan. He termed the visit of Chairman NAB to China very positive and said that his visit to China will further enhance cooperation and collaboration between China and Pakistan in curbing corruption and both countries will learn each other’s experiences. He said that China has 1.3 billion population.

The ruling Communist Party of China has 80 million members which is the biggest party in the world. Chinese nation under the leadership of President Xi Jinping has firm resolve against corruption across the board and we have taken to task many big names (Tigers) who were allegedly involved in corruption and corrupt practices either in ruling party, government and other functionaries in order to improve the image of China among the nations of the world.

He said China gives top priority to its relationship with Pakistan and has made investment in various projects in Pakistan. China has recently announced to invest in Pak-China Economic Corridor Project which will not only strengthen Pakistan’s economy but also create thousands of job opportunities in Pakistan.

He thanked the Chairman NAB for invitation for the visit of Huang Shuxian, Minister of Supervision People’s Republic of China to Pakistan in September 2015 and termed it a positive step of Pakistan for signing Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between Pakistan and China for sharing each other’s experiences in curbing corruption and to carry out the steps for sharing the knowledge of White Collar Criminals, money laundering and other issues of bilateral interests.  DNA
