Gen. Qamar Bajwa appointed chief of army staff

RAWALPINDI, NOV 26: Govt has appointed Gen. Qamar Javed Bajwa has been appointed Chief of Army Staff while Gen. Zubair Mahmood Hayat has been appointed as Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee.

DNA had already reported last week that either General Bajwa or Gen Ramday shall be picked up as new army chief. Now the govt has appointed Gen. Qamar Bajwa as new army chief.

Qamar Bajwa has served in 10 corps which is the most important corps. LT. Gen Ashfaq Nadeem Ahmed and Lt. Gen. Javed Iqbal Ramday have been superseded therefore they will take retirement as per practice. Lt. Gen Maqsood and Lt. Gen. Najeeb have also been superseded.

Appointment of Gen. Zubair was expected as being senior most officer he was supposed to be the new chairman joint chiefs of staff committee.

Gen. Zubair’s two brothers are also serving generals. Gen. Qamar is known as a quick decision maker. Being corps commander of the 10 corps, he effectively dealt with the issues at the Eastern borders.

Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa was commissioned in 16 Baloch Regiment on 24 October 1980. He is graduate of Canadian Forces Command and Staff College, (Toronto) Canada, Naval Post Graduate University, Monteray( California) USA, National Defence Univesity, Islamabd.

He has been an instructor at School of Infantry and Tactics, Quetta, Command and Staff College, Quetta and NDU. He has also been Brigade Major of an Infantry Brigade and Chief of Staff of Rawalpindi Corps. He has commanded 16 Baloch Regiment, an Infantry Brigade and has commanded Infantry Division in Northern Areas ( Commander FCNA). He has also commanded Pakistan Contingent in Congo. He has commanded Rawalpindi Corps, and is presently Inspector General Training and Evaluation at GHQ.

Gen Zubair Mahmood Hayat was commissioned in Artillery Regiment on 24 October 1980. He is graduate of Fort Sill Oklohoma, USA, Command and Staff College Camberlay United Kingdom and National Defence Univesity, Islamabad. He has wide experience of command, staff and instructional appointments. He has commanded an artillery regiment, mechanized division artillery, an infantry Brigade and an Infantry Division. He has been Adjutant at PMA, Brigade Major of an Infantry Brigade, Army and Air adviser at Pakistan embassy in UK. He has also been Chief of Staff of a strike Corps, Private Secratarty to COAS and Director General Staff Studies Directorate at GHQ . He has also held the appoitnement of Director General Strategic Plan Division (SPD) . He has commanded 31 Corps Bahawalpur and is presently Chief of General Staff at GHQ.
