After the 2nd World War, the European Union (EU) was built on the idea of liberal values against the terrible experience of national-socialism in Germany.

In 1989, communist countries of Eastern and Central Europe joined the liberal camp in becoming members of the EU.  30 years later,  populist forces are contesting the idea of liberal order in the EU, which was based on free markets, open borders and the rule of law. Populist parties won free elections in some EU Member States.

They are all anti-globalization, anti-EU and anti-establishment. How to explain this political phenomenon, who does not attract only labor classes but also middle classes? Is it part of a more general phenomenon in the West ? What can the EU do to bring new trust to the electorate who is voting for the populist parties in the EU ?

Prof. Christian Lequesne shall shed light on all these important aspects of the European Union.=DNA
