Capt Safdar ordered to file reply by June 15
ISLAMABAD, 01 JUNE (DNA) – The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has ordered Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s son-in-law, MNA retired Capt Mohammad Safdar, to file reply in a case pertaining to his assets.
Capt Safdar, who is member National Assembly, was summoned by the ECP today at its headquarters in Islamabad to respond a petition regarding his assets. The petition was filed last week with the ECP by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s Nawabzada Salahuddin Saeed who stated that Capt. Safdar had not mentioned in his nomination papers the ownership of foreign properties of his spouse, Maryam Safdar, as revealed by the Panama Papers leaks.
The petitioner has appealed ECP to unseat Safdar and launch criminal proceedings against him for ‘lying’ and ‘concealing’ his assets. Today, the ECP formally heard the plea and issued orders to Capt. Safdar to file his response by June 15. Kanwar Dilshad, a former ECP secretary, while speaking to media, says the PM’s son-in-law could be disqualified, banned for five years or sentenced for three years
Safdar denies concealing assets of his wife. Sharif’s sons, Hussain and Hassan, run their business empires from Britain and Saudi Arabia while his daughter, Maryam, lives in Pakistan. DNA
