ISLAMABAD – The High Commission of Canada has extended its congratulations to Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and the Senate and National Assembly of Pakistan further to the joint session of Parliament yesterday during which both houses jointly passed legislation on rape and on so-called “honour killings.”

This marks an important step in ongoing efforts to protect the dignity and to ensure the safety of girls and women in Pakistan. It also assists boys and men who themselves are vulnerable to “honour killings.”

The Pakistani parliament has recognized in legislation that homicide is not only a crime against the victim and her or his family, it is a crime against the State – because it is a crime against us all. Effective implementation of this legislation will contribute to building a safer, stronger, and more prosperous society for all Pakistanis.

“I commend the Prime Minister, the Minister of Law and Justice, Senator Farhatullah Babar, former Senator Sughra Imam, and all parliamentarians who voted for this legislation for their commitment to advancing women’s rights,” said Acting High Commissioner Ann Cleminson.

“We must also recognize the valuable contributions of civil society leaders and the media, whose advocacy and reporting during the past several months have fostered ongoing and important dialogue within Pakistan on ‘honour killings’ and sexual violence.”
