ISLAMABAD, JUN 1 /DNA/ – European Union Foreign Policy Chief Kaja Kalas underscored Pakistan’s importance in regional and global affairs during a joint press conference with Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar in Islamabad. Addressing a wide range of issues, she emphasized that the Generalized Scheme of Preferences Plus (GSP Plus) trade status is not merely an economic arrangement but is deeply tied to good governance, environmental protection, human rights, and labor standards.

Kalas noted that Pakistan has been the largest recipient of GSP Plus benefits since the program’s inception, which has provided significant trade advantages to the country. She stressed that continued access to these benefits depends on Pakistan’s commitment to upholding democratic values, protecting workers’ rights, and ensuring sustainable development. “GSP Plus is not just about trade; it is about values and responsibilities,” she remarked.

Turning to regional security, Kalas praised Pakistan’s constructive role in the U.S.–Iran standoff, describing its diplomatic efforts as “laudable.” She revealed that the European Union is prepared to engage directly with Iran to seek a peaceful resolution, but insisted that Tehran must address concerns related to its nuclear program. “Dialogue is the only way forward, and Iran must be willing to talk openly about nuclear issues,” she said.

On Pakistan’s security concerns, Kalas affirmed that the country has the right to defend itself against any aggression, a statement that drew attention to ongoing tensions in South Asia. She cautioned, however, that strained relations between Pakistan and Afghanistan could trigger instability across the region. “Peace in Afghanistan is essential for stability in South Asia, and Pakistan’s role will be critical in ensuring that tensions do not escalate,” she added.

Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar echoed her sentiments, highlighting Pakistan’s commitment to regional peace and its determination to meet international obligations under the GSP Plus framework. He reiterated that Pakistan values its partnership with the European Union and sees it as a cornerstone of its foreign policy.
