Trump says Iran's 'new regime' president has asked for ceasefire

WASHINGTON, APR 1: U.S. President Donald Trump stated on Tuesday that the president of Iran’s “new regime” has asked for a ceasefire in the ongoing conflict, but the United States will only entertain any truce once the Strait of Hormuz is fully reopened to international shipping.

Speaking to reporters, Trump described progress in indirect communications with what he called a “much more reasonable” and “less radicalized” Iranian leadership that emerged following heavy U.S.-Israeli military strikes and the death of former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei earlier in the war.

He characterized the situation as having achieved a form of regime change, even as Iran’s formal structures—including President Masoud Pezeshkian—remain in place amid an interim leadership period.

“Iran has asked for a ceasefire,” Trump said. “They are begging to make a deal. But we will only consider it seriously when the Strait of Hormuz is open — fully open — for everyone.

No more games.”The Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint through which roughly one-fifth of global oil passes, has been largely closed or severely restricted since the escalation of the 2026 Iran war, causing oil prices to surge and global energy markets to tighten.

Iran has used its position there as leverage, with some Iranian officials stating the waterway will reopen “but not for you” or only under new conditions and “laws” set by Tehran.
