ISLAMABAD, FEB 23 (DNA) – The Supreme Court on Friday disqualified PTI leader Abdul Munim Khan from the membership of the provincial assembly of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.*

A three-judge bench, headed by Justice Sheikh Azmat Saeed, gave this verdict on an election petition of Sher Alam, who challenged the Peshawar High Court verdict that had set aside the Election Commission of Pakistan’s judgement about disqualification of the PTI lawmaker.

Alam, candidate of Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam Fazl (JUI-F) from Shangla, challenged the election of Abdul Munim on PK-88 before the ECP, which allowed his petition, disqualifying the PTI lawmaker.

Aggrieved at the decision, the PTI candidate approached the high court, which restored his membership of the provincial assembly.

Afterwards, the JUI-F candidate went to the Supreme Court assailing the high court verdict.

Sher Alam claimed that Abdul Munim was a school teacher and tendered his resignation to contest the election on provincial assembly seat (PK-88) few days before scrutiny of his nomination papers.

He contended the PTI leader should be disqualified on the ground that he had remained a government employee and contested the polls even before the mandatory period of two years had not lapsed since his resignation.
