Sherry Rehman files nomination papers for opposition leader in Senate
ISLAMABAD, MAR 15 (DNA) – Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) senator Sherry Rehman has filed nomination papers to be appointed as opposition leader in the Senate.
On Wednesday, PPP chairman Bilawal Bhutto nominated Rehman for the position. Senator Rehman submitted her nomination papers to Senate chairman Sadiq Sanjrani. Her nomination is supported by 33 members of the opposition.
Rehman’s supporters include some independent members from Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata) and Balochistan besides Awami National Party (ANP) and Balochistan National Party-Mengal (BNP-M) senators.
If elected, Rehman would be the first female opposition leader in the upper house of parliament.
Earlier, Bilawal took to Twitter to express hope that Rehman would make history by becoming the first-ever woman to lead the opposition in Senate.
Senator Rehman, former Pakistani ambassador to the United States, would alter Pakistan’s history if nominated and elected for the position. If so, Rehman will replace senior party leader Aitzaz Ahsan, who recently retired from the Senate.
Rehman was also federal minister for information and broadcasting from 2008-2009 in the PPP government.
