Senate nomination form: IHC issues notices to ECP, Attorney General and others

ISLAMABAD, FEB 23 (DNA) – Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Friday summoned reply from Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), Attorney General, Law Ministry and secretaries of parliamentary affairs in one week in reference to the plea over elimination of clauses in nomination form of Election Act 2017.

Justice Amir Farooq conducted hearing on the petition submitted by Awami Muslim League (AML) chief Sheikh Rasheed.

His lawyer Barrister Sharjeel adopted stance that less details have been sought from a candidate in the new form of Election Act 2017. He maintained that every voter has the right to information under article-19.

The lawyer requested the court to direct Election Commission to seek all the details from the candidates and restore the clauses eliminated from the nomination form.

He told court that clause 60, 110 and 137 of Election Act 2017 are in violation of article-19 of the constitution. At least 19 changes have been made in the Senate election form as the blocks of nationality, defaulter and assets have been changed.

The court after hearing the arguments issued notices to the relevant authorities.
