QAU students observe strike over hike in fee, lack of facilities
ISLAMABAD: 22 DEC (DNA) – Quaid-e-Azam University on Tuesday turned into battlefield when students staged strong protests against abnormal hike in university fee and the ignorance on their demands by the University administration.
According to details, a registered students union of the university, Quaid-e-Azam University Students Federation (QSF), gave few demands to the administration asking them to cut down fee to a lower level, to improve and extend university facilities, accommodation facilities, to redress the drinking water issues, gas shortage and internet problems and improvement in mess.
Despite assurances given by the administration of the QAU, the demands were continually ignored for long which triggered anger and panic among the students.
The students said that there were no proper drinking water facilities in the campus, mess system was too substandard, hostels and accommodations are like a cage, and university administration does not want to improve them and also want the students to keep their mouth shut.
Besides, the winter is at its peak and the university hostels facing gas shortage, said the students. “Weather conditions are severe and the hostel administration refrain us from using electric heaters to keep ourselves and our rooms warm.
When asked to a hostelite students of the university about the problems of students presiding in the hostels, she told on the condition of anonymity that students have to use cold water for their daily-usage, they are not allowed to have an electric heater in their rooms and besides all, they are lacking internet facility which, being a student, is their foremost necessity.
On Tuesday morning the University students setup road blocks at all entrée points of university, forced all students to vacate their respective departments and staged strong protest in favour of their demands.
Few students also locked the classrooms to restrict any curricular or academic activity from taking place.
Protestors were chanting slogans against the university administration and in favour of their demands, following which the Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Javaid Ashraf came to the students to negotiate over the issues. The students chant slogans against the VC and refused to suspend the protest until the fulfillment of their demands and redressing of their genuine issues.
Vice chancellor, instead of negotiating with the students to redress their genuine issues, started abusing students that they are putting the security of the university on high risk and destroying law and order situation of the university.
The students expressed their determination to carry on the protest even after the opening of university after Eid Miladun Nabi holidays. They have said their protest will remain continue until the administration did not properly address their demands. =DNA
