Punjab CM departs for London to meet Nawaz Sharif
LAHORE, OCT 29 (DNA) – Punjab Chief Minister (CM) Shehbaz Sharif departed from Lahore on Sunday to meet his elder brother Nawaz Sharif in London.
The Sharif brothers will exchange views on the current political situation in the country and will devise a future strategy in this regard. Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) is also scheduled to hold an important meeting which will be attended by several party leaders.
Nawaz Sharif who is currently in Jeddah will fly to London today where his wife Kulsoom is receiving medical treatment. He will then fly to Islamabad on November 2 from there.
Foreign Minister Khawaja Asif has also departed to Jeddah to meet the ousted premier.
Nawaz Sharif will appear before the accountability court on November 3 after his bailable arrest warrants were issued on last hearing. On October 19, the
accountability court in Islamabad indicted the former prime minister as well as his daughter and son-in-law on corruption charges stemming from documents leaked from a Panama law firm.
A lawyer for the 67-year-old Sharif entered a plea of not guilty. Maryam Nawaz, and her husband, Capt (r) Safdar, also attended the hearing and pleaded not guilty.
The charges stem from a trove of documents — known as the Panama Papers — that investigators say showed the family held unreported assets overseas. The family has denied any wrongdoing.
After leaving the courtroom, Maryam Sharif again denied the allegations as “baseless.” She said her father would return to Pakistan and that they would “face these cases with courage.”
Sharif’s political future has been in doubt since July, when the Supreme Court disqualified him from office over corruption charges.
Rana Sanaullah, a senior leader of Sharif’s party, the Pakistan Muslim League, said there were “hidden hands” behind his dismissal and the spate of corruption allegations, without elaborating.=DNA
