NEW DELHI, 29 JAN (DNA) – An agreement between Pakistan and India regarding Rail Communication has been extended by mutual consent through diplomatic channels for the period of three years.

The agreement has been extended from January 19, 2016 to January 18, 2019, a statement issued by the Ministry of External Affairs said here on Friday. The Agreement, signed on June 28, 1976, enables India-Pakistan rail communication both in respect of goods and passenger traffic.

Currently, passenger and goods traffic operates on Delhi-Lahore route via Attari Wagah, and passenger traffic between Jodhpur and Karachi via Munabao Khokhrapar.

A brief meeting between Sharif and his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the UN climate change summit in Paris on November 30, followed by talks between the two countries  national security advisers in Bangkok, appeared to have broken the ice.

Pakistan and India have been at odds ever since they were both carved out of British India in 1947 amid bloodshed on both sides.

Pakistan was formed as a Muslim-majority state, while the predominant religion in India is Hinduism. The two countries have fought three major wars, including two over Kashmir. DNA
