New premises of UN information office inaugurated

ISLAMABAD, OCT 22 (DNA) The new premises of United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) were inaugurated in Islamabad on Thursday.The new UNIC is situated in the ILO building G-5/2 Islamabad. The ribbon cutting ceremony was held with the Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Parveiz Rashid as chief guest.

Ambassador of Argentina and Dean of Diplomatic Corps, Rodolfo Martin Saravia Resident Coordinator UN Mr. Neil Buhne and Director UNIC Mr. Vittorio Cammarota were present and spoke on the occasion.
The official opening of the new UNIC office also brought to a close the UN70 festival which was a series of events held in Pakistan to mark the completion of 70 years of the UN.
Speaking on the occasion Federal Minister Perveiz Rasheed highlighted the role of the UN in making the world a better place and spoke about Pakistan’s support to UN peacekeeping operations in 23 countries. He also said :
“Public support for the United Nations would obviously grow as more and more people know about its endeavours to address their needs and priorities on a broad range of issues from poverty, climate change, health, hunger to illiteracy and sustainable development.”
Resident Coordinator Neil Buhner expressed gratitude to all the stake holders who had helped make UN70 a success.
Director UNIC Mr. Vittorio Cammarota giving details about the new centre said “Established in Karachi in 1951, our office is part of the network of 63 United Nations Information Centres currently operating all over the world. In the past few years we have made considerable efforts to open our doors to the Pakistani people and institutions to make sure that they feel integral part of our Centre and are involved in our activities.”
The new UNIC office will enable to serve its counterparts betters and to improve the interaction with media and other counterparts. The new office allows better access to improved facilities which include a dedicated area for interns and a state-of-the art multimedia studio. The equipment for the studio was donated by several UN agencies for the benefit of the whole UN system.
Heads of various UN agencies and a large number of diplomats and media representatives attended the inauguration ceremony.=DNA
