RIYADH, SEP 16: The Muslim World League on Wednesday strongly condemned Houthi attacks targeting Mecca and the Medina region, describing them as a violation of the sanctity of Islam’s holy sites and a threat to civilians.

In a statement, MWL Secretary-General Mohammed al-Issa denounced what he called the Houthis’ “terrorist approach” in targeting holy sites, mosques, schools and civilian facilities.

He also called on Islamic countries and the international community to condemn the attacks and expressed solidarity with Saudi Arabia and the measures taken by the Kingdom to protect holy sites and civilians.

The statement came after Saudi Arabia said its air defenses intercepted and destroyed a Houthi drone on Tuesday before it entered the prohibited airspace around Mecca.

Saudi authorities said the drone was intercepted south of the city and described the incident as the second attempt to target Mecca, following a ballistic missile attack in July 2017.
