ISLAMABAD/KARACHI: The Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) has called for a nationwide referendum to decide the future of new provinces in Pakistan, urging all political parties to support the move. MQM leaders stressed that the opinion of the people must be respected, arguing that the creation of new provinces is the need of the hour to ensure better governance and equitable distribution of resources.

MQM’s demand comes amid growing debate over administrative reforms and the failure of existing structures to deliver. Party representatives emphasized that only by directly consulting the public can the government determine whether new provinces should be carved out to address grievances of marginalized regions.

Meanwhile, former Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi also weighed in on the issue, declaring that corruption is rampant in Pakistan and that the government is “nowhere to be seen” in tackling the crisis. Abbasi echoed MQM’s stance, stating that new provinces are essential to improve governance and reduce the concentration of power. He argued that decentralization would help curb corruption and bring decision‑making closer to the people.

Abbasi’s remarks highlight the growing frustration among political leaders and citizens alike. Inflation, unemployment, and weak institutions have eroded public trust in the system. Calls for new provinces are increasingly seen as a way to address administrative inefficiencies and ensure fair representation.

Analysts note that while the demand for new provinces is not new, the push for a referendum adds urgency to the debate. If political parties unite behind the proposal, it could mark a significant step toward reshaping Pakistan’s political map.
