LUMS denies arrest of student on terrorism charges

LAHORE: The Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) on Thursday categorically denied reports that a student from the educational institution has been arrested on terrorism charges.
LUMS Dean of Student Affairs Yasser Hashmi confirmed that the student has not been arrested and was “present in the university’s library when he was contacted.”
The Director General (DG) Administration Amir Khan also stated that “no arrest was made.”
The statement from LUMS also appeared on the Facebook page of LUMS Students and Alumni Action Committee (LSAAC).
According to the post from LSAAC, the rumors doing the rounds on social media originated from Indian media and a private Pakistani news channel.
“The student in question is a hostelite, currently in LUMS. He is not a graduate nor is his father an army officer as claimed by the news outlests,” said the post from LSAAC.
The post further stated that the student council and the administration of LUMS will fully cooperate with law enforcement agencies if the need arises.
LSAAC referred to the news reports as “irresponsible journalism by news agencies.”
Earlier, media reported that three suspects, including a student of a private university, were picked up by law-enforcement agencies in connection with the recent attack on an airbase in India.
Some television new channels had reported the arrest quoting intelligence agencies.
Indian intelligence agencies had shared five cellphone numbers with Pakistani security agencies in connection with the Pathankot attack.
However, counter-terrorism department officials and cantonment division police denied any arrest in connection with the Pathankot attack.
