Iran-GCC cooperation imperative for global energy supplies

Islamabad: “The assistance of Iran is required for the development of Dorra/Arash Gas Field”, said Dr. Shigeto Kondo, senior researcher at Institute of Energy and Economics Japan (IEEJ). He expressed these views at an event organized by the Iran Program at Institute of Regional Studies, Islamabad.
Mr. Kondo argued that there was a need to establish the maritime border for the successful supply of energy. Any conflict over the energy resources should be handled mutually, he further added. On the recent issue of Dorra/Arash Gas Field, Mr. Kondo was of the opinion that the issue was insignificant as this particular gas field didn’t produce any substantial volume of gas.
While responding to a question, Mr. Kondo opined that resurfacing of this issue might hold negative consequences for the de-carbonization and diversification drive of the GCC states. The Dorra/Arash Gas Field would not impact the recent rapprochement between Iran and the GCC, particularly the KSA, however, the issue could be exploited as a bargaining chip, Mr. Kondo stated.
Lastly, Mr. Kondo highlighted that both sides have downplayed this matter intentionally in order to continue towards the path of reconciliation.
