Foreign Minister of Maldives to visit Pakistan today

ISLAMABAD, APR 23, (DNA) – Dr. Muhammad Asim, Foreign Minister of the Republic of Maldives, will visit Pakistan from April 23 to 26.
The Maldivian Foreign Minister is visiting Pakistan on the invitation of the Adviser to the Prime Minister on Foreign Affairs, according to a press release. The visiting dignitary will call on the Prime Minister of Pakistan.

During his visit, various aspects of bilateral relations will be reviewed. Bilateral relations between Pakistan and the Maldives are characterized by cordiality, mutual respect and commonality of interests.

Both countries are bound in fraternal bonds of common faith and continue to support each other at various international fora. The visit will help in the further strengthening of bilateral relations between these two countries.

President of Maldives His Excellency Mr Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom appointed His Excellency Dr. Mohamed Asim as the Minister of Foreign Affairs on 13 July 2016. Minister Asim is a long serving diplomat, with several ambassadorial postings.

Minister Asim began his career in the Maldives public service in 1983 at the President’s Office. He was first appointed to the foreign-service in 2004, as the Maldives High Commissioner to Sri Lanka, with non-resident accreditation to Pakistan and Bangladesh, and later, as the Maldives High Commissioner to the UK from 2007-2008 with concurrent accreditation to the EU.

In 2013, Dr Asim was reappointed as Head of Mission to the EU. After a period of one year, he was transferred to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as Ambassador-at-Large. At the Ministry he headed the East, Central and South Asia Divisions, and was responsible for coordination of bilateral matters with countries in that region.

From 2015 till his appointment as the Minister of Foreign Affairs he was the High Commissioner of Maldives in Bangladesh.

Dr. Asim holds a PhD in political science and international relations from the Australian National University and an MA in international relations from the California State University, Sacramento. His first degree was obtained in 1983 from the American University of Beirut in the field of Public Administration.
