ECP rules out military meddling in polls

ISLAMABAD, (DNA) – An official of the electoral commission on Thursday ruled out the military’s involvement in July 25 polls, saying it had been tasked to “ensure security”.

“The Army is not meddling in elections. The role assigned to them is limited to providing security,” said Babar Yaqub, secretary of the Election Commission of Pakistan.

“Th election commission is responsible for organising and conducting the general election. The military s job is to provide security as per the constitution.”

He also promised to conduct a “free and fair” election.

Yaqub said the electoral commission issued a code of conduct for foreign observers, polling staff and security officials. “Only concerned officials will disseminate election results,” he added.

He continued: “Election-related material will be delivered at every polling station by July 24. Mobile phones won t be allowed in polling stations.”
