Dr Arif Alvi elected 13th President of Pakistan
ISLAMABAD, (DNA) – Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) candidate Dr. Arif Alvi has been elected as 13th president of Pakistan for the next five years as Senate and the newly elected national and provincial assemblies – together known as the electoral college of Pakistan – voted for presidential polls.
Arif Alvi of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI), Aitzaz Ahsan of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and PML (N) backed Maulana Fazlur Rehman were vying for the seat.
Arif Alvi bagged 212 votes, Maulana Fazlur Rehman got 131 votes and PPP’s Aitzaz Ahsan got 81 votes.
Chief Election Commissioner Justice Sardar Muhammad Raza served as returning officer and high court chief justices as presiding officers.
In Sindh Assembly, 158 votes were cast out of 163 while 60 members among a total of 61 voted in Balochistan Assembly. Nawab Sanaullah Zehri did not cast his vote.
In Punjab Assembly, 351 votes were cast out of 354 whereas 111 members among a total of 112 participated in the election process in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly.
Polling stations were set up in the Parliament House and the four provincial assemblies where the NA, Senate members and MPAs took part in the voting process.
The tenure of outgoing President Mamnoon Hussain will end on September 8 and he had declined for a re-election.
