President Mamnoon to unveil date for 2018 general elections next week
ISLAMABAD, MAY 17 (DNA) – As the incumbent government of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PMl-N) is about to complete its five-year term, President Mamnoon Hussain is set to announce the date for upcoming general elections next week.
Pakistan is likely to hold the election on July 27, 2018, when people will decide about the future of the country, local media reported.
A summary proposing an election date would be sent to the president in next few days, while Hussain will declare the date in next week, Dawn News reported, citing sources. Under Section 57 of the Election Act, 2017, the president is liable to announce the election date after consulting the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).
According to the law, the ECP is required to make public the election schedule within seven days after the announcement of the election date by the president.
The sources informed that the polling schedule would be announced either on May 28 or 29, but they did not disclose the date being proposed by the ECP for elections.
Another official said that the election likely to be held on July 27, adding that the general elections for national and provincial assemblies are held within 60 days following the expiry of the assemblies’ terms.
The five-year constitutional term of the national and Punjab assemblies will complete their term on May 31 while Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Sindh and Balochistan assemblies’ term will end on May 28.
ECP’s working on the upcoming election is underway, while a process for the delimitation of constituencies has been completed.
The district returning officers, returning officers and presiding officers have already been appointed and the training of staff has been started.
