British-Pakistani Sajid Javid becomes UK’s first Muslim home secretary
A British politician of Pakistani descent has been appointed by Prime Minister Theresa May as the new home secretary of the United Kingdom.
Sajid Javid’s appointment was announced on Monday after Amber Rudd succumbed to pressure and tendered her resignation over the handling of immigration policy.
Rudd confessed in a letter to PM May that she had “inadvertently misled” MPs on the Commons home affairs committee over targets for deportations.
“I should have been aware of this and I take full responsibility for the fact I was not,” she wrote in her resignation letter which was accepted by the British premier.
Rudd’s departure also ‘saddened’ Javid, who termed her a ‘big talent’.
