PM arrives in Kazakhstan to attend Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) - Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has embarked on a three-day visit to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) from 21-22 May 2017 to participate in the first trilateral US-Arab-Islamic Summit, to be held in Riyadh on Sunday. In addition to King Salman and US President Donald J. Trump, 55 Heads of State and Government from the Muslim world have been invited to participate in the Summit. The Summit in Riyadh will provide an opportunity for the participating countries to discuss how to overcome the menace of terrorism and extremism across the world. The Summit is expected to delink ‘terrorism’ from any particular religion, culture, civilization or region. In his address at the Summit, as well as during his interaction with world leaders, Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif will focus on Islam’ message of peace, tolerance and unity. He will highlight the great sacrifices and major successes achieved by Pakistan in defeating the scourge of terrorism and extremism in the region. The Prime Minister will also join the world leaders to attend the inauguration ceremony of the World Centre against Extremism, an important counter-radicalization initiative by Saudi Arabia.

ISLAMABAD, JUN 08 (DNA) – Prime Minister (PM) Nawaz Sharif will head out to Kazakhstan today to attend the two-day meeting of the Heads of State Council of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO). Punjab Chief Minister

Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif, Commerce Minister Khurram Dastagir and Foreign Affairs Adviser Sartaj Aziz will accompany the PM.

During his stay, the PM will be holding bilateral meetings with the presidents of Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan today, as well as the Mongolian and Russian presidents on Friday.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will also be attending the conference, as India too will be granted full membership of the SCO.

According to sources, there may be a chance meeting between Sharif and Modi on the sidelines of the summit.

With the inclusion of Pakistan and India, the SCO will have a total of eight states as permanent members — after China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.

The group will then represent nearly half of the world’s population after the inclusion of the subcontinental neighbours.

Pakistan and India both currently hold observer status at SCO. The decision, in principle, to grant Pakistan the membership was taken by the SCO Heads of States meeting at Ufa, Russia in 2015.

The prime minister will also be attending the inaugural ceremony of the International Expo 2017, in which more than 100 countries, including Pakistan, are participating.=DNA
