Britain records 29,520 new COVID-19 infections, 93 deaths

LONDON – Britain recorded 29,520 new COVID-19 infections on Saturday and 93 deaths within 28 days of a positive test for the virus, according to government data. That compares with 32,700 new cases and 100 deaths on Friday. The data also showed that 47.3 million people have had a first dose of a vaccine and 40.4 million have had two.


Qatar urges Taliban to cease fire in Afghanistan during Doha meeting

Qatar said it had urged the Taliban to cease fire and pull back their offensive in Afghanistan during a meeting between the Qatari foreign minister and a top representative of the Afghan insurgents in Doha on Saturday. “The foreign minister urged the Taliban at the meeting to let up the escalation and to cease fire,” it said. Envoys from the United States, China, Pakistan, the United Nations, the European Union and others met Taliban representatives and Afghan government officials on Thursday in Doha. The statement issued following that meeting reaffirmed that foreign capitals would not recognise any government in Afghanistan “imposed through the use of military force”.
