02 murderers executed in Rawalpindi jail

RAWALPINDI, 10 MAY (DNA) – Two death row convicts were executed Tuesday morning in Adiala Jail. Retired Capt Zafar Iqbal had murdered 11 persons in 1994 in Arya Mohallah and Sangori Village of Mandra over longstanding enmity while Mirza Sarfraz had slain a local in Gujar Khan area in 1993.

Both the convicts were hanged in the early hours. Iqbal’s review plea was turned down by a three-member bench of Supreme Court (SC) in 2008 while his clemency plea was also rejected by the president.

Retired captain’s execution was deferred twice in April. The government had lifted moratorium on executions in December 2014 after an attack on Army Public School (APS) claimed over 130 lives mostly students.

The decision was taken to execute terrorists for which an amendment in the Constitution of Pakistan was also brought paving way for establishment of military courts. Military courts were established for speedy trials of terrorists. However, the aforementioned convicts were hanged after civil courts’ trial. DNA
