What next for Pervez Musharraf in Pakistan?

ISLAMABAD, (DNA) – The Islamabad court on Thursday ordered police to arrest former President Pervez Musharraf after cancelling his bail plea. The police when tried to arrest Pervez Musharraf his personal guards prevented his arrest and took him away immediately. Analysts say Pervez Musharraf will be arrested at the end of the day untill and unless another court grants him bail. His arrest has been ordered in Judges removal case. However it will be very difficult to arrest him since he has also been army chief. The caretaker government is likely to talk with the sitting army chief regarding his arrest. The islamabad police are now conferring as to how to proceed in this case. It is likely that Pervez Musharraf house will be declared sub jail and he will remain there as a captive.

Former President Pervez Musharraf came to Pakistan after getting guarantees from both internal and external quarters that he will not be touched and provided with a level playing field. Two  main countries played key role in getting guarantees for the former army chief  that talked with leading political parties of Pakistan including PML N and Pakistan Peoples Party.

That is why when Pervez Musharraf landed in Pakistan a few months ago, PML N President Nawaz Sharif adopted a soft corner for him and tried to give an impression as if exile was not solution to any problem and no person should be sent abroad.

It was a clear shift in PML N policy which previously had been against Pervez Musharraf and was demanding his trial under Article 6 of the Constitution of Pakistan, according to which the criminal is to be handed down either death sentence or life imprisonment. But suddenly the PML N changed its stance.

No military dictator in Pakistan has ever been tried so analyst believe Pervez Musharraf may get same flexibility, however those who do not seem eye to eye with this notion believe there is huge difference between the past and present politics of Pakistan. In pat there was no vibrant media present and everything was pushed under the carpet. But now media is unmasking everybody, even the military people and people believe if the media continues with its present stand, then Pervez Musharraf will have to face seriousl problems.

Pervez Musharraf’s predicament is that nobldy is on his side or if someone wants to be on his side he cannot do it openly because of the fact that Pervez Musharraf does not enjoy any popularity in Pakistan. People say his decision to come back to Pakistan has proved counterproductive and now he must be repenting on his decision because for the moment no way out seems in sight for him.

One thing is for sure Pervez Musharraf does not have any role in Pakistani politics. The only way for him to again become active in politics may be if the military again takes over. Then he can be put at the helm of affairs once again.
