Trump threatens to end American aid to countries over Jerusalem vote
WASHINGTON, DEC 21 (DNA) – U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday threatened to stop financial aid to countries that vote in favour of a draft United Nations resolution opposing the recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.
Trump announced decision to move U.S. embassy to Jerusalem earlier this month. The move drew wide international criticism including from Afghanistan and the 193-member U.N. General Assembly will hold a rare emergency special session to vote on a draft resolution calling for the U.S. to reverse its decision.
“They take hundreds of millions of dollars and even billions of dollars, and then they vote against us. Well, we’re watching those votes. Let them vote against us. We’ll save a lot. We don’t care,” Trump told reporters at the White House.
Earlier, 14 of 15-member U.N. Security Council voted in favour of the resolution, following which the U.S. Ambassador to U.N. Nikki Haley, in a letter to dozens of U.N. members, warned that Trump had asked her to “report back on those countries who voted against us.”
In a Twitter post, she also said: “The U.S. will be taking names.”
Afghanistan, which is fourth largest recipient of U.S. aid after Israel, Egypt and Jordan
It is not clear if the warning would change Afghanistan’s stance while it votes at the U.N. over Jerusalem move.
