Election of 11 PML-N senators challenged in LHC
LAHORE, MAR 12 (DNA) – The Lahore High Court (LHC) has been petitioned on Monday against notification of success of 11 PML-N backed independent senators-elect.
The petition has been filed by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Dr. Zarqa Taimur.
The petitioner has adopted a stance that the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) had overstepped its authority after declaring the ruling party candidates as independent to take part in the Senate elections.
The ECP didn’t have any authority to declare the PML-N candidates as independent in wake of Sharif’s removal as the ruling party president, the petition reads.
Moreover, the petitioner has pleaded with the court to declare the notification of 11 senators-elect, having backing of PML-N, null and void.
As many as 33 Senators, having backing of PML-N, emerged victorious in recently held Senate polls, making the ruling party as the largest parliamentary group of the house. While, the PPP has overall 20 seats in the Senate and the PTI stands third major party in the Senate with 13 seats.
Pakistan’s Senate comprises of 104 members and to replace the outgoing Senate chairman Raza Rabbani with their candidates, the mainstream parties need at least 53 votes.
The newly formed Senate will elect its chairman and deputy chairman each with a majority vote of at least 53 members as the session will resume at 4:00 pm later today.
