Train accident kills twelve in Hafizabad
GUJRANWALA, 02 JULY (DNA) – A train that was being used by army fell into a stream, killing at least twelve including three officers near Gujranwala, hospital sources and officials said.
The army spokesman Maj Gen Asim Bajwa said four bogies of special train carrying military troops to Kharian fell over bridge near Jamke Chattha in Canal. “Rescue underway,” he said on official Twitter.
Nearly 85 other people were injured. Railways Minister Saad Rafiq said he does not rule out terrorism in the incident. He said a high level team is investigating the accident.
Officials said two bogies of the special train fell into a stream and two others were derailed as the railway bridge collapsed near Gujranwala, some 73 kilometers from Lahore.
Rafiq said that six people are still missing and rescue teams and divers of Pakistan navy are searching for the missing persons. He said other people have been evacuated by the rescue teams including the army troops.
Railways spokesman Rauf Tahir said that heavy machinery has arrived at the scene for relief operations. He said the injured have been shifted to the nearby hospitals. DNA
