Death toll in Karachi heatwave rises to 750
KARACHI, 23 JUNE (DNA) – The death toll due to heatstroke in the last four days has risen to more than 520 in Karachi.According to official sources, most patients are men of aged 50 or more.As per details, more than 200 deaths have been reported from Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, 71 each at Civil Hospital and Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, 28 at Qatar Hospital, 22 each at Ziauddin Hospital and Liaquat National Hospital, 30 at Indus Hospital, 15 at Lyari General Hospital and 8 at Sindh Government Hospital.
Sindh Government has declared emergency in all the hospitals of the province and has directed the administration to ensure prompt availability of doctors, paramedical staff and necessary medicines to provide immediate treatment to the heatstroke patients.
Pakistan Army and Pakistan Rangers Sindh have also established Heatstroke Relief Centers at various places in the city to provide immediate help to the patients affected by intense heat.
It may be pointed out that Karachi is in the grip of intense heat for the last four days with temperatures staying above 40 and touching 45 on Saturday last that also broke a ten year record of highest temperature.
Continuous and prolonged outages of electricity have also added to the miseries of people.
Pakistan Meteorological Department has forecast that temperature will begin to decrease from this evening while there are also chances of rain in the Southern part of Sindh including Karachi. DNA
