Washington denounces complaint leveled against Lebanon envoy
WASHINGTON, OCT 14: The US State Department denounced a complaint filed by a lawyer against Lebanese ambassador to the US Nada Hamadeh Moawad and that was reportedly referred to the military judiciary.
Some Lebanese media outlets reported that the complaint was over an alleged phone call between Moawad and her Israeli counterpart, Yechiel Leiter, after the latter’s son was wounded in a ramming attack in the occupied West Bank.
The complaint was reportedly referred to the Government’s Commissioner to the Military Court. Lebanon’s military court deals with matters related to the country’s national security including communication with Israel and terrorism cases.
“We are aware of the complaint filed by a Hezbollah-aligned lawyer against Lebanon’s ambassador to Washington, Nada Hamadeh Moawad,” a State Department spokesperson said.
The State Department said it was troubling that a military court was handling this complaint against Moawad, who was implementing the legitimate government’s policy and participating in US-led negotiations.
“The Lebanese military judiciary should use its limited resources to prosecute Hezbollah operatives plotting against the Lebanese government and people instead of those working on their behalf,” the spokesperson said. “Laws and practices that enable this kind of politicized targeting of civilians and diplomats, while systematically shielding Hezbollah operatives, must be repealed. We have no patience for obstruction.”
Lebanese media reported that this was a normal part of procedures taken and doesn’t necessarily mean that legal action will be taken against the ambassador.
