China mediates Pakistan-Afghanistan conflict through its own channels
BEIJING, Feb 27: China has been mediating the Pakistan-Afghanistan conflict through its own channels and is willing to continue to play a constructive role in deescalating the situation and improving relations between the two countries.
This was stated by the Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Mao Ning on Friday in response to a question concerning the fierce clashes and rapid escalation of tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan in their border areas, according to China Economic Net (CEN).
Pakistan and Afghanistan are close neighbors and both are also neighbors of China. As a neighbor and friend, China is deeply concerned about the escalation of the conflict and is deeply saddened by the casualties caused by the conflict, Mao said.
The intensity of the current round of Pakistan-Afghanistan conflict far exceeds previous incidents, and its continuation or escalation will bring harm and losses to both sides, the spokesperson added.
China supports combating all forms of terrorism and calls on both sides to remain calm and exercise restraint, resolve differences and disputes through dialogue and consultation, and achieve a ceasefire as soon as possible to avoid more suffering.
This serves the fundamental interests of the two countries and peoples, and will help maintain regional peace and stability, Mao said.
Chinese Foreign Ministry and the Chinese embassies in Pakistan and Afghanistan are working with relevant parties in both countries on this matter.
China has asked the two countries to ensure the safety of Chinese personnel, projects, and institutions within their territories, the spokesperson said.
In response to another question on whether China is considering evacuating Chinese nationals and companies from Pakistan and Afghanistan or suspending relevant flights due to the fierce cross-border clashes between the two countries, Mao said on Friday, “We are closely following the development of the situation and will provide necessary assistance to Chinese nationals in need.”
