Reports about PM’s participation in Eastern Economic Forum in Russia ‘speculative’: FO
ISLAMABAD (DNA) – Foreign Office (FO) Spokesperson Dr Muhammad Faisal said on Tuesday that the reports in the media about Prime Minister Imran Khan s participation in the Eastern Economic Forum (EEF) in Russia are “speculative.”
He took to Twitter, and stated that Pakistan and Russia remain in contact about engagement at the highest level.
“Any announcement in this regard would be made formally at [the] appropriate time,” he wrote.
His statement comes as Prime Minister Imran is scheduled to meet US President Donald Trump on July 22 during an official working visit to Washington.
A couple of days ago, sources revealed to the media that Russian President Vladimir Putin invited Prime Minister Imran Khan to attend the Eastern Economic Forum (EEF) scheduled to be held from September 4-6 in Vladivostok.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is also scheduled to participate in the economic forum.
Eastern Economic Forum is an international forum held each year since 2015 in September, at Far Eastern Federal University in Vladivostok, Russia, for the purpose of encouraging foreign investment in the Russian Far East. The Russian president and the Japanese premier have attended this forum since its beginning.
The economic forum is sponsored by the organising committee appointed by Roscongress, an association of the Russian Government, which also sponsors other international forums, such as St. Petersburg International Economic Forum.
Besides, the EEF serves as a platform for the discussion of key issues in the world economy, regional integration, and the development of new industrial and technological sectors, as well as of the global challenges facing Russia and other nations.
PM Khan and Russian President Putin met last month at the SCO summit in China.
Pakistan and Russia have both been on the same page regarding bringing long-term peace to Afghanistan. In December 2018, Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi visited Russia during a whirlwind four-nation tour.
